“The International Committee of The Red Cross (ICRC) officially handed over a few of its’ delegates’ reports about political imprisonment on Robben Island to the Robben Island Museum on 13 May 2010. It also donated this Artwork that commemorates the humanitarian work of the ICRC over the past 154 years.
Anna Mueller created the artwork to mark the 150th anniversary and to celebrate ICRC efforts towards changes in the Robben Island Maximum Security Prison between 1963 and 1991. ICRC work in South Africa included all political prisoners detainees and the families of political prisoners.
ICRC delegates were permitted to inspect prison conditions and to speak directly to individual political prisoners. Many prisoners submitted written testimonies that authorised ICRC to address the atrocities described.
Notice the images of the ex-political prisoners, detainees and exiles in the top panel. Not all were imprisoned on the island. The images speak to the inclusivity of Robben Island Arrivo subito! a national museum of apartheid imprisonment and banishment.” [text by RIM]
